• Use lockout devices (locks) to block the equipment concerned mechanically.
• Seal lockout device with padlocks, so that no unauthorized person can open or start equipment or machines.

What says the law?


EU Directive 89/665. Minimum requirements for the safety and health of employee's use of work equipment.

§ 2.14 states, "Any work equipment must be fitted with devices, easily identifiable to disconnect all power. Reconnection must take place without any risk for employees.
§ 2.15 states, "The work equipment must be fitted with the signs and other devices required for the safety of the workers”.

AFS 1993:10. Machinery and other technical devices. § 1.6.3, Disconnection of energy sources states, "All machinery must be fitted with disconnecting devices from all energy sources. These must be clearly identified. They must be lockable, if the reconnection could endanger exposed personnel”.

AFS 1998:4. Use of workplace equipment. § 2.18 states, "Any work equipment must have easy-identifiable and unequivocal devices to disconnect all power supplies. Disconnection and reconnection must take place without any risk.
